Schools and Childcare Facilities

Influenza Information for Schools and Childcare Facilities:

Preventing the flu is a joint effort in schools. Students, parents, and staff need to take the necessary precautions to stop the flu from circulating. The flu can be contagious one day before symptoms appear and can easily be spread from child to child by sharing pencils, toys, computers, as well as hand to hand contact in a setting like a school.

Although the flu can’t always be prevented, you can greatly reduce the odds of infection by taking several precautionary steps. It is recommended that everyone 6 months of age and older get a yearly flu vaccine unless a specific condition is present.

Your goals as a teacher or caregiver are to do your best to:

  • Get as many staff and children immunized before and during the flu season as possible.
  • Reduce the spread of respiratory disease as much as possible.
  • Appropriately recognize illness, and care for and exclude ill children when necessary.\

Information for Travelers

The risk for exposure to influenza during travel depends somewhat on the time of year and destination. Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine yearly, preferably in the fall before the U.S. flu season begins. People who have not gotten a flu vaccine for the current season and are traveling to parts of the world where influenza activity is ongoing should get a flu vaccine to protect themselves during their trip.

Before, During, and After Your Trip:

  • Investigate current flu activity in your region of travel.
  • Pay attention to announcements from the local government in your travel destination and monitor the local health and security situation.
  • Follow any movement restrictions and prevention recommendations.
  • Closely monitor your health for 7 days.

Get more information on influenza for travelers from CDC’s publication Health Information for International Travel.

Business and Industry

How influenza could affect workplaces:

Influenza can have an impact on a daily business and couple it with the COVID-19 pandemic could have a major impact on overall business operations. Your workplace will likely experience:

  • Absenteeism:  In addition to suffering from influenza themselves, employees may be absent because they, must care for sick family members or for children if schools or daycare centers are closed, or are afraid to come to work during an outbreak.
  • Change in patterns of commerce: Consumer demand for items related to infection control is likely to increase dramatically, while other consumer interest in other goods may decline. Consumers have drastically changed the way they shop due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with an influenza outbreak along with COVID-19 this will further affect this way of life. Proper planning will allow employers to better protect their employees and prepare for changing patterns of commerce and potential disruptions in supplies or services.

The following toolkit from the CDC will provide action steps that business owners, managers, and employees can take to minimize the effect of flu in the workplace.

  1. Prevent Flu: There are steps you can take now, and during the flu season, to help protect employees’ health.
    1. Promote Flu Vaccine in the Workplace
    2. Remind Sick Employees to Stay Home When Sick
    3. Prepare for a Flu Pandemic
  2. Promoting Flu Vaccines: Encourage flu vaccination by offering onsite flu vaccination or resources on community flu vaccine locations.
    1. Benefits to Employers:
      • Reduces cost by decreasing time missed from work to get vaccinated.
      • Reduces cost by reducing absences due to illness, resulting in improved productivity
      • Vaccination often already covered under employee health plans
      • Improves morale
    2. Benefits to Employees:
      1. Reduces absences due to sickness and doctor visits
      2. Improves health
      3. Convenience
      4. Improves morale
    3. Hosting a Flu Vaccination Clinic:
      1. Resources are available for hosting your won flu vaccination clinic, including a step-by-step guide to help clinic coordinators/supervisors who oversee vaccination clinics.
