WV consistently ranks first nationally for per capita antibiotic prescription rates in both pediatric and adult outpatient populations. However, WV faces unique obstacles to care in many regions including geographic barriers, poverty, variable health literacy and sparse provider density in most rural areas.  Over the last three years, a Marshall-based antimicrobial stewardship team has collaborated with WV Medicaid to better understand the factors associated with high outpatient antibiotic prescribing with the goal of facilitating sustainable, evidence-based stewardship interventions.  This webinar aims to both empower providers across the state with the tools and metrics necessary to reduce unnecessary antimicrobial use while simultaneously uncovering some of the complex sociodemographic dynamics affecting provider-patient interactions.

Webinar Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe national, regional, and local data related to antimicrobial use in WV;
  2. Summarize treatment recommendations for common infections managed in the outpatient setting (e.g. respiratory, urinary and skin/soft tissue infections);
  3. Identify the stewardship team & current initiatives; and
  4. Connect with networks of providers across the state to identify key factors influencing antimicrobial stewardship barriers & successes.
