Webinar: West Virginia COVID-19 Vaccine Update

The CDC recently recommended new booster shots targeted at the Omicron BA.4/BA.5 strains of SARS-CoV-2. This webinar will provide a situational update of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SARS COV-2 variants that are currently circulating, and the West Virginia response. It will also provide an overview of the recommendations for the Omicron COVID-19 booster shots and clinical guidance for administering these vaccines.

Webinar Objectives:

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • State the CDC’s recommendations for COVID-19 Omicron booster vaccination;
  • Describe clinical considerations for administering the Omicron COVID-19 booster vaccines; and
  • Understand and apply data-driven communication strategies for communicating with the public to boost COVID-19 vaccination confidence.

Speakers:

Krista D. Capehart, PharmD, MS, BCACP, FAPhA is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Director of the Wigner Institute for Advanced Pharmacy Practice, Education and Research at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy. She is also the Director of Professional and Regulatory Affairs at the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy. Dr. Capehart completed her PharmD at the University of Michigan and completed a Master of Science in Pharmacy focusing on drug policy and regulation at the University of Florida.  She employs her areas of interest in her Wigner duties by assisting with direct patient care service development, improving health care access in rural areas through expanded pharmacy services, increased patient self-management awareness and knowledge, health literacy, and enhanced counseling opportunities in the community setting. Dr. Capehart utilizes her experience in health policy and regulation and clinical experiences to advocate for her patients, the profession of pharmacy, and in her role with the Wigner Institute. Recent regulatory advancements include WV pharmacist provider status, pharmacist contraceptive prescribing, and numerous practice-based enhancements. Dr. Capehart is the pharmacy lead for the WV Joint Inter-Agency Task Force for COVID-19 Vaccine and Therapeutics Distribution. Dr. Capehart is Past-President of the West Virginia Pharmacist Association and current Secretary for the Association. She has received multiple awards including the 2022 Hubert H Humphrey Award from the American Pharmacist Association, 2021 American Pharmacist Association Immunization Champion, 2021 WV Bowl of Hygeia, Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service. U.S. Department of the Army 2021, 2021 West Virginia Rural Health Association Excellence in Rural Health – Individual award and National Woman Pharmacist of the Year in 2020.

Lisa M. Costello, MD, MPH, FAAP, is a lifelong West Virginian who hails from Weirton, WV and currently resides in Morgantown, WV. She is an assistant professor in the Department Pediatrics at West Virginia University (WVU) and a Pediatric Hospitalist at WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital. She is co-director of the Pediatrics Clerkship and the advisor for the medical student group Student Advocates Impacting Decision on Healthcare. Dr. Costello is the immediate past president of the West Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and President of the West Virginia State Medical Association. She is a graduate of the Leadership WV Class of 2021. Dr. Costello serves as an advisor to the WV Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health during the COVID-19 pandemic response and is the medical lead of the Joint Information Center within the WV Joint Interagency Task Force For COVID-19. At the national level, she is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on State Government Affairs.

Julia Daisy Fraustino, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Reed College of Media at West Virginia University, where she is founding director of the Public Interest Communication Research Laboratory (PIC Research Lab) in the Media Innovation Center. She specializes in risk, emergency, crisis, and disaster communication science from a public interest perspective emphasizing community resilience and ethics. She has won numerous research awards and has worked grants and contracts from entities such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Institutes for Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF), among others. She helps lead the Joint Information Center in the WV Joint Interagency Task Force on COVID-19, contributing to evidence-based messaging for the state’s pandemic response. Those efforts led to her being decorated with the U.S. Army Civilian Commendation Medal for her exceptional service to the state and nation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, work for which she was also named a 2021 West Virginia Woman Making History by the WV Immunization Network.
