The 2020-2021 Influenza Season – Prevention, Control, and Surveillance of a Long-time Threat in a New Era

It goes without saying that the COVID-19 pandemic has created a new normal for humankind and it has already created significant challenges in preventing and controlling infectious respiratory disease worldwide. This presentation aims to prepare public health practitioners for the upcoming 2020-2021 influenza season and the impacts that the pandemic will have on traditional influenza prevention, control, and surveillance.

Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe influenza and COVID-19 in terms of their etiologic agents, signs, and populations at high risk of disease complications.
• Describe components of influenza and COVID-19 surveillance has been collected on these diseases in the past year.
• Learn about the delivery schedule and presentations of 2020-21 influenza vaccines and the Advisory Committee to Immunization Practices recommendations on the use of influenza vaccines.

Lauren Spadafora, PhD
Influenza Surveillance Coordinator
Division of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, WVDHHR/BPH/OESP

Lauren Spadafora is the influenza surveillance coordinator for the state of West Virginia, and she serves as a member of the Division of Infectious Disease Epidemiology (DIDE)’s outbreak: team. She was previously the epidemiologist for the Ohio Coverdell Stroke Program that is housed within the Ohio Department of Health. Lauren received her Ph.D. from the Pathobiology program at the University of Washington in 2015, conducting diagnostics research with an international consortium. She obtained her Bachelors’s degree in microbiology and biochemistry from Miami University.

Vaccine Manager/ VFC Coordinator
Division of Immunization Services, WV Bureau for Public Health

Jeff was West Virginia’s first Vaccines for Children (VFC) Coordinator at its inception on October 1, 1994, and became the VFC Coordinator again in 2019 after serving 17 years as the Program Manager. Jeff manages vaccine procurement, provider orders, VFC enrollment, and provider participation. Jeff has 27 years of experience in Immunization Services which he has used to participate in various workgroups and committees.
