Hello, Summers County! Let’s chat about something close to our hearts: the well-being of our youth. In our picturesque corner of West Virginia, we’re fortunate to have natural beauty and a close-knit community, but when it comes to recreational opportunities for our younger generations, we certainly have room to grow.

Currently, Summers County offers a few recreational activities, but imagine the potential if we expand these options. It’s not just about what we have; it’s about what we could have – and why it matters so much.

Recreational Benefits

It’s crucial to understand just how influential recreational opportunities can be. They extend far beyond play; they shape health, character, and community. Let’s explore how:

  1. Physical and Mental Health Benefits
    • Physical Health: Engaging in regular physical activity is vital for growing bodies. Recreational activities help maintain a healthy weight, develop motor skills, and boost overall physical fitness.
    • Mental Health: The benefits extend beyond the physical. Activities like sports, hiking, or even group fitness classes can significantly , reducing anxiety and depression, and increasing self-esteem.
  2. Development of Life Skills
    • Teamwork and Social Skills: Participating in team sports or group activities teaches valuable social skills. It’s about learning to cooperate, understanding the importance of teamwork, and developing communication skills.
    • Decision making and Responsibility: Regular participation in recreational activities skills that are crucial in all areas of life.
  3. Community Impact
    • Social Cohesion: Community-based recreational programs can bring people together, fostering a sense of belonging and community spirit.
    • Economic Benefits: Increased recreational opportunities can also have economic benefits, potentially attracting more families to the area and boosting local businesses.

Our Efforts

In recent years, Wild, Wonderful and Healthy Summers County worked in the community to develop the All Aboard Community Park as a multi-generational recreational area. It was our goal to create a safe green space for our community and to give our youth a place to play!

However, our county is home to a number of other recreational activities to encourage our youth. We have a 4-H program through the WVU Extension, there are fishing docks, we have access to numerous trails and outdoor activities, and that does not even begin to tap into the organized sports programs that exist.

While we have a good start, there is plenty of opportunity for more!

It’s Our Future

As we wrap up, let’s remember that creating and supporting recreational opportunities for our youth is an investment in their future and the future of Summers County. It’s not just the responsibility of local authorities; it’s a community effort. We can all contribute – whether it’s through volunteering, donations, or simply encouraging our kids to participate in these activities.

Let’s Take the Next Steps Together:

    • For Parents and Guardians: Encourage and/or enroll your children to take part in local recreational activities.
    • For Community Leaders: Consider the benefits of expanding recreational offerings and support initiatives that aim to do so, like Adventure Appalachia and Active Southern West Virginia.
    • For Everyone: Get involved! Whether it’s attending a planning meeting, coaching a little league team, or supporting local events.

Summers County is our home, and together, we can make it a vibrant, healthy, and joyful place for our young ones to grow up. Let’s give our children the gift of play, team spirit, and a love for the outdoors!
