In this update, we’ll journey through the achievements that have shaped the community and explore ongoing initiatives that promise an even brighter future. Buckle up as we share the transformative power of community collaboration.
Let’s start by revisiting two pivotal projects that have left an indelible mark on Summers County.
All Aboard Community Park
Our Q&A interview with Shalom Tazewell and Patti Crawford sheds light on the success story of the WWHSC Green Space Project, now affectionately known as All Aboard Community Park. Nestled on the West End of Hinton, this multi-generational recreational area is a testament to collaboration. With the support of the WVU Community Engagement Team, the City of Hinton, and various funding sources, the park has become a haven for community members of all ages. Through challenges and triumphs, over 75 community volunteers, including our dedicated CORE Team members, played a vital role in bringing this vibrant space to life.
Housing Rehabilitation and Volunteering
Facing the critical issue of safe and affordable housing, WWHSC’s CHI Committee set out on a mission to improve living conditions for low-income residents. In another insightful discussion, we reconnected with Shalom Tazewell and Patti Crawford to discuss the challenges and progress in tackling dilapidated housing. The establishment of a Land Reuse Committee, collaborations with the City of Hinton and County Commission, and the mobilization of volunteers exemplify the concerted efforts to address this public health concern.
As WWHSC propels into the fourth quarter of 2023, our focus is firmly set on the goals outlined in our 2024 Annual Action Plan. A snapshot of ongoing efforts includes:
- Priority Health Issue
The commitment to improving access to safe, affordable, and well-managed rental housing remains steadfast. Initiatives include the cataloging of rental properties, categorizing structural conditions, and distributing a Renter’s Rights brochure to empower tenants. - Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) Implementation
The execution of evidence-based strategies aligns with the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) aiming to enforce city code and county ordinances that promote safe, affordable, and well-managed housing. - Volunteerism
With an emphasis on community involvement, WWHSC seeks volunteers for various roles, from physical labor on housing projects to input on the CHI Committee. Opportunities abound for those with a passion for community development. - Small Businesses/Residential Housing
Collaborations with local entities, churches, elected officials, and community groups continue to identify properties for rehabilitation and secure funding sources for necessary repairs. - Demolition Work
Working closely with local government, WWHSC strives to overcome barriers to demolition, prioritize structures threatening public safety, and repurpose vacant lots into vibrant community spaces. - Community Safety and Health
Advocating for amendments to city code and county ordinances ensures the establishment of obligations for property owners and the definition of renters’ rights, contributing to overall community well-being.
As we stand on the precipice of a new era for Summers County, WWHSC extends an invitation to all community members and organizations to join hands in shaping the future. Here are some projects we have in the works:
Continue Identifying Properties for Rehabilitation
Collaborating with local entities, churches, and elected officials to survey properties in need of rehabilitation.
Enhance Tenant Advocacy
Roll out a Renter’s Rights brochure and host Community Forums for Tenants, empowering residents with knowledge of their rights.
Further Demolition for Community Safety
Collaborate with the local government to demolish additional blighted buildings and create vibrant community spaces on repurposed vacant lots.
Strengthen City Codes and County Ordinances
Advocate for amendments to establish obligations for property owners and define renters’ rights, contributing to a healthier and more equitable living environment.
The journey continues, and with the community’s unwavering support, Wild, Wonderful, and Healthy Summers County is poised to turn aspirations into reality. Join us as we continue on this transformative adventure, ensuring Summers County thrives as a beacon of health, happiness, and community strength.
