Webinar: Preparing for the 2022-2023 Influenza Season

The Preparing for the 2022-2023 Influenza Season webinar will provide valuable updates for healthcare providers, laboratorians and public health professionals on upcoming influenza surveillance and prevention activities, such as sentinel provider enrollment and available flu vaccines. Topics will include the importance of influenza surveillance, the laboratory submission procedures for the state public health laboratory, influenza vaccines available this coming season, as well as an Acute Flaccid Myelitis update. The presentation will also showcase a lookback on viral respiratory pathogen trends from the 2021-2022 influenza season in West Virginia.

Objectives:

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the importance of influenza surveillance;
  2. Summarize the 2021-2022 influenza season in West Virginia;
  3. Discuss laboratory specimen procedures for respiratory pathogens;
  4. Describe the flu vaccines that will be available in the U.S. during the 2022-23 influenza season and the presentations that will be offered by the Bureau for Public Health; and
  5. Summarize the latest AFM investigation and reporting recommendations and requirements to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WVDHHR).

Speakers:

Maria del Rosario, MD, MPH

Dr. del Rosario serves as the Medical Epidemiologist and Director of Surveillance for the Division of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the WV Bureau for Public Health from 2005 to present. Her professional priorities include: disease surveillance and investigation of reportable infectious disease conditions; dissemination of surveillance information to stakeholders; sharing disease prevention and control measures; providing education, training, and consultation to local health, other partners, and the public; and assisting in emergency response.

Jillian Jeffrey, MPH

Jillian Jeffrey is the Respiratory Disease Epidemiologist and Influenza Surveillance Coordinator with the Division of Infectious Disease Epidemiology. Jillian coordinates all aspects of viral respiratory pathogen surveillance and response.  She worked as the Regional Epidemiologist for West Virginia’s Northwestern Region where she served as the area expert on infectious disease prevention and control before joining the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health in February of 2022.

Jeff Neccuzi, BS

Jeff Neccuzi is the Vaccine Manager/VFC Coordinator, Division of Immunization Services, WV Bureau for Public Health. He was West Virginia’s first Vaccines for Children (VFC) Coordinator at its inception on October 1, 1994 and became the VFC Coordinator again in 2019 after serving 18 years as the Program Manager. Jeff manages vaccine procurement, provider ordering, VFC enrollment and provider participation. Jeff has 27 years of experience in Immunization Services which he has used to participate in various workgroups and committees.

Christi Clark, MPH, M(ASCP)CM

Christi Clark is the Associate Director Clinical Services/Interim Director of the Office of Laboratory Services at the WV Bureau for Public Health. Ms. Clark began her employment at OLS in December 1998 as a Microbiologist and worked to implement two new laboratory areas. In 2001, she moved to the Microbiology Section and became the lead technologist for the PulseNet program. In 2006, she was promoted to Supervisor of the Microbiology Section and oversaw the growth of the respiratory testing program to include organisms beyond influenza including RSV and Enterovirus/Rhinovirus. In 2017, she was named Associate Director of Clinical Services. Ms. Clark obtained her MPH from WVU in the fall of 2019.  Then, in July of 2022, she was appointed as the interim director of the Office of Laboratory Services.
