During this webinar, the presenters will provide insights from qualitative and quantitative data about COVID-19 vaccine perceptions, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors among West Virginians. They will discuss tailored communication strategies to address real and perceived barriers to vaccination and to increase vaccination motivation and confidence among patients, especially those disproportionally affected and/or at greater risk of severe COVID-19 disease.

Julia Daisy Fraustino, PhD
Dr. Fraustino is an assistant professor in the Reed College of Media at West Virginia University, where she is director of the Public Interest Communication Research Laboratory (PIC Research Lab) in the Media Innovation Center. She specializes in risk, emergency, crisis and disaster communication science from a public interest perspective emphasizing community resilience and ethics. She has won numerous research awards and has worked on risk and crisis communication grants and contracts from entities such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Science Foundation, among others.
Daniel Totzkay, PhD
Dr. Totzkay is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University. He is a faculty research affiliate in the WVU PIC Research Lab. His research focuses on communication to change health and risk behavior, the design and evaluation of health and risk communication interventions, improving healthcare access and delivery, and addressing matters of health equity with strategic communication activities. He has been awarded and has worked on numerous health and risk communication grants and contracts from entities such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, and others.
Lisa M. Costello, MD, MPH, FAAP
Lisa M. Costello, MD, MPH, FAAP is a lifelong West Virginian who hails from Weirton, WV. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department Pediatrics at West Virginia University (WVU) in Morgantown, WV and a Pediatric Hospitalist at WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital. She is co-director of the Pediatrics Clerkship, leads a healthcare literacy and patient advocacy curriculum thread for the M.D. program, and is the advisor for the medical student group, Student Advocates Impacting Decision on Healthcare. Dr. Costello currently serves as the president of the West Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Vice-President of the West Virginia State Medical Association, Vice-Chair of WESPAC, and serves on the Board of Directors for the WV Children’s Health Insurance Program. She is a member of Leadership WV Class of 2021. Dr. Costello currently serves as an advisor to the WV Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health during the COVID-19 pandemic response, Assistant Public Information Officer for Information Products, Joint Information Center, West Virginia Joint Interagency Task Force For COVID-19 Vaccines, and helped launch the #LETSGOgratitude project that teaches students about helpers in the pandemic and provides an opportunity for students to send messages of support for pandemic workers.
