Webinar: COVID-19 Vaccination Updates and Communication Strategies to Protect Pediatric Populations in WV

The presenters for this webinar will provide an overview of the risks of COVID-19 disease for pediatric populations and detail the available COVID-19 vaccination options for various age groups under age 18. The presenters will also provide evidence-based recommendations from the body of academic literature and qualitive and quantitative data analysis from West Virginian parents and guardians. These recommendations can inform provider-patient/guardian communication to enhance COVID-19 vaccination confidence.

Webinar Objectives:

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Summarize the impact of COVID-19 on children and adolescents;
2. Understand and apply the CDC’s recommendations for COVID-19 vaccination in pediatric populations; and
3. Understand and apply data-driven communication strategies for communicating with adolescents and caregivers to boost COVID-19 vaccination confidence.

Speakers:

Lisa M. Costello, MD, MPH, FAAP, is a lifelong West Virginian who hails from Weirton, WV and currently resides in Morgantown, WV. She is an assistant professor in the Department Pediatrics at West Virginia University (WVU) and a Pediatric Hospitalist at WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital. She is co-director of the Pediatrics Clerkship and the advisor for the medical student group Student Advocates Impacting Decision on Healthcare. Dr. Costello is the immediate past president of the West Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and President-elect of the West Virginia State Medical Association. She is a graduate of the Leadership WV Class of 2021. Dr. Costello serves as an advisor to the WV Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health during the COVID-19 pandemic response and is the medical lead of the Joint Information Center within the WV Joint Interagency Task Force For COVID-19. Julia Daisy Fraustino, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Reed College of Media at West Virginia University, where she is founding director of the Public Interest Communication Research Laboratory (PIC Research Lab) in the Media Innovation Center. She specializes in risk, emergency, crisis, and disaster communication science from a public interest perspective emphasizing community resilience and ethics. She has won numerous research awards and has worked grants and contracts from entities such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Institutes for Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF), among others. She helps lead the Joint Information Center in the WV Joint Interagency Task Force on COVID-19, contributing to evidence-based messaging for the state’s pandemic response. Those efforts led to her being decorated with the U.S. Army Civilian Commendation Medal for her exceptional service to the state and nation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, work for which she was also named a 2021 West Virginia Woman Making History by the WV Immunization Network.
