Local health departments play an extraordinary role in protecting and improving the health of our communities. The Local Health Officer is a critical part of local public health services, making vital contributions to the community’s well-being and safety. This training will provide an overview of the laws and rules for carrying out the duties as a Local Health Officer, local case studies, and resources to assist in doing so. It will also provide an overview of public health informatics and the role of local health officers as chief public health strategists.

2. Describe two practices Chief Public Health Strategists use; and

3. State one practice that will improve the health officer’s strategic position locally.

Speaker: Meghan Shea, MPH, Sr. Program Analyst – Informatics, National Association of County & City Health Officials (NACCHO)

1. Define public health informatics and its role in improving population health outcomes at the local level;

2. Explore commonly used public health informatics tools, processes, and data standards; and

3.Describe the policy landscape of public health informatics, particularly for Local Health Departments.
